＜Cobalt-based Coating＞
Cobalt is primarily used as the metal, in the preparation of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys. The cobalt-based alloy is well known for their properties of excellent wear resistance at high temperatures and good corrosion resistance. The cobalt-based alloys are mostly with additions of Cr, C, W, and/or Mo. The cobalt-based coatings are resistant to cavitation, corrosion, erosion, abrasion, and galling. Alloys with lower carbon are recommended for cavitation, sliding wear, or moderate galling applications. Alloys with higher carbon are recommended for abrasion, severe galling, or low angle erosion applications. However, the cobalt based alloy is a choice that have a good balance of these properties.
The thermal sprayed cobalt-based coatings keep their properties at high temperatures(up to 600°C) where they also have excellent oxidation resistance. The coatings can be finished to a mirror-like surface with a low coefficient of friction and behave good sliding wear. The stability at high temperature makes them suitable for applications of turbine blades for gas turbines and jet aircraft engines.
